Virtual Exhibition - In Remembrance by Kiannah Titus

Co-Curated Exhibition, Into the Mind Of a "Woman"

This Exhibition was co-curated by Tamara Collington, Jessalyn Smith, and Kiannah Titus.

The Curatorial Statement for the show is as follows:

“This exhibition is designed to empower both female and nonbinary artists by giving them an avenue to fearlessly express their diverse talent. Although the women’s suffrage movement ended decades ago, gender inequity remains a prevalent cause for concern within society, specifically, the institution of art. For instance, today, “women make up a majority of professional art museum staff but despite recent gains, they remain underrepresented in leadership positions” (Art Museum Staff Demographic Survey 2018).  But why? Why are women still treated as an afterthought in 2019? This is especially troubling when women and people who identify as nonbinary have insurmountable and astounding personal stories that demand to be heard.  An example of this is a nonbinary artist, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, who makes work “that reclaims, challenges, and brings center focus to bodies and stories of Queer Black people” (Johnathan Lyndon Chase). The exhibition will emphasize that female and nonbinary artists are here and have something of great importance to say. Each nonbinary and female artist is given a platform in this exhibition to present a story that they deeply resonate with. While viewers enter the exquisite world of each artist, the artwork asks viewers to meditate on the striking messages being broadcasted.”
