Virtual Exhibition: Emoji - The observation of clashing emotions - Jessalyn Smith

Curated by Jessalyn Smith

Statement:
We live in an online world where emotions can be shown in a variety of ways. Emoji’s were created by Shigetaka Kurita in an attempt to make communicating online more fun and understood in our fast-paced world. Depending on what image you attach accompanying a message, the message can be taken in many ways. Emoji: The observation of clashing emotions depicts images in pairs where one, you may take a positive emotion from but the other is more negative depending on how you understand it. Look at these images and ask yourself how you many read a message like “I hate you” or “Shut up” accompanied by each image. How does the message differ? And why does this change the meaning of the message?
